What is school-based occupational and physical therapy?
Occupational and physical therapy in the school setting is a related service that assists the student to benefit from special education services by providing extra support and help in needed areas. Therapists assist in the achievement of educational objectives and address management needs that allow a student to access education.
In the school setting, an occupational therapist works on improving, developing or restoring functions that are impaired as well as improving the ability to perform tasks for independent function. Occupational therapists may address self-help skills, activities of daily living, sensory-motor processing, fine motor skills, life skills/vocational skills and psychosocial adaptation.
Physical therapists in the school setting provide treatment to improve muscle strength, mobility and endurance focusing on gross motor skill development. A physical therapist may also work on improving a students posture, gait, and body awareness. Physical therapists monitor the function, fit and proper use of mobility aids and adaptive equipment.
